What Sits Under the Old Rail Town

Clay drains from the first streets

Blackalls Park began in 1870 as a settlement around a railway platform, and the earliest houses went up in the decades before plastic pipe existed. Their sewers are earthenware with a joint every short length. Decades of shifting ground have opened those joints, and each gap lets in roots and lets out waste.

Steel water pipe in the cottages

The fibro and weatherboard homes built through the middle of the last century were plumbed with galvanised steel. Rust builds inside it until the pressure drops at the kitchen tap, the water runs brown and a threaded joint starts to weep.

Water close to the surface

Blocks sitting low near Stoney Creek and the mouth of LT Creek have a high water table. A trench there takes on water as it is dug, and pipe buried in wet soil corrodes sooner than pipe on higher ground, which is why pipe relining can suit these blocks better than a dig.

How Quotes Work Here

"Not only all of that but the job came in right on quote." Steve

That means you know the full cost of the job before a single pipe is cut. It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

The price on a job here depends on:

  • Reaching the pipe Some cottages have floors set low to the ground, and crawling in to reach a pipe takes longer than working in an open subfloor.
  • The pipe you have Swapping out rusted galvanised steel is a bigger job than joining new PVC.
  • Parts The system or fittings the repair calls for.
  • The hour Work outside business hours is priced higher, and that is set out before we start.

When we're not the right call. A tripping switchboard is a job for an electrician, and a crack running up a wall or a sagging ceiling needs a builder. We name the trade to ring and leave it with them.

Old Tanks and Wet Winters

Hot water systems past their age

Plenty of families here have owned their homes for a long time, and census figures show 38.6 per cent of homes owned outright. Electric storage tanks put in when many homes were renovated in the 1990s are now beyond the age these units are built to last, so a cold morning with no hot water is a real risk. A temporary unit keeps the household in hot showers while the replacement is organised.

Rain the street drains can't keep up with

Autumn and winter storms off the coast push runoff down the Fassifern ridge toward the bay faster than the older drainage can clear it. If a storm hits while the lake is high, the lowest yards can see water rise back through the gully. The stormwater drains page covers what we do about it.

Questions People Ask Before Ringing

Is there a call-out fee for jobs in Blackalls Park?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). We inspect the fault, give you a fixed figure and wait for your yes before starting. Outside business hours a call-out rate applies, and we name it when you ring.

Are you available after hours and on weekends?

Yes, we are Available 24/7, weekends and public holidays included. Night and weekend work is charged at a higher rate, which is part of the fixed figure you agree to. A burst pipe, a sewer overflow or a gas smell can be booked whenever it happens.

Can one team handle both my water and gas work?

Yes. Our plumbers hold gas fitting licences as well, so a dripping tap, a new gas cooktop and a gas hot water unit can all be done by the same person. You deal with one business and one quote.

What hot water systems can you install here?

Electric storage, instant electric, gas storage, continuous-flow gas, heat pump and solar. Many long-held homes here still run an older electric tank, and if yours fails we can fit a temporary tank so the household has hot water while the new system is sorted.

My drain keeps blocking. Should I get a camera check?

Yes, if it has blocked more than once. The older blocks here drain through clay pipe with joints that have moved apart, and a camera run shows whether roots, a crack or a sag is to blame. You see that footage before we price a fix.

Who owns the sewer pipe in the street?

Hunter Water, the water authority, owns the sewer main in the street, not the council, and a fault in it is theirs to fix. Your private drain up to the connection is ours.
